Coding, Robotics, and Engineering for Young Students : A Tech Beginnings Curriculum

Description

Coding, Robotics, and Engineering for Young Students builds foundational computer science and robotics skills and knowledge in bright Pre-K-grade 2 students. This curriculum emphasizes active, hands-on, and collaborative learning. Students are challenged to learn computer science content, such as coding and robotics engineering concepts, as well as practice high-level academic skills, such as creative problem solving, computational thinking, and critical thinking. Instructional practices balance screen time with active, collaborative classroom engagement. Learning is deepened when students are challenged to navigate the transition from a virtual learning environment to a tangible learning environment. The lessons can be implemented as standalone enrichment experiences or as part of a coordinated scope and sequence that leads to higher level computer science and engineering studies.

What other sporting book will explain the rules of elephant polo; the perils of the Cresta Run; the intricacies of the Palio; the breathtaking antics of Kabaddi; or why surfing is the 'Sport of Kings' (in Hawaii). Which other volume will inform you of the importance of snooker to nuns; the correct temperature of a 'hot bath'; the words of the Haka (and Swing Low Sweet Chariot); the myriad participants of the 'Wacky Races'; or what W. G. Grace considered cheating. Where else will you stumble across famous sleepers; tips for solving cryptic crosswords; pub games and parlour games; or every sporting ailment from joggers' nipple to housemaid's knee. With the Typhon Pact fleet nipping at his heels, Riker must find a Coding, Robotics, and Engineering for Young Students : A Tech Beginnings Curriculum free epub way not only to stop the Gorn (without violating the Prime Directive), but also to gain control of the ancient terraforming tech. Of everyone serving aboard Titan, only Commander Tuvok (a witness to Project Genesis's unintended effects) truly understand how dangerous such planet-altering technology can be, even when used with the best of intentions...

Punctuating the series are images of Buddhist rituals and other religious ceremoniesa suggestion of other means by which humankind has traditionally attempted to transcend time and memory. The series is her first to be fully realized with a medium-format, 4 x 5 camera, instead of the 2 -inch format for which she has become best known.

Shell and Spatial Structures: Computational Aspects : Proceedings of the International Symposium July 1986, Leuven, Belgium

Description

In recent years powerful engineering workstations for a reasonable price become a valuable tool for the design of complicated constructions such as shell and spatial structures. This availability causes an increasing use of advanced numerical techniques for the static and dynamic analysis of these structures, also in the non-linear range. The I.A.S.S. Working Group nO 13 concerned with "Numerical Methods in Shell and Spatial Structures" and the Department of Civil Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have taken the initiative to organise an International Symposium, providing a forum for discussion and exchange of views between researchers, specialists in numerical analysis on one hand and designers, practising engineer- ings on the other hand. These Proceedings contain the papers presented at the Symposium, held in Leuven, July 14-16 1986. The papers are organised in five sections 1. Shell structures 2. Spatial structures 3. Dynamic analysis 4. Non-linear analysis 5. Presentation and interpretation of results The papers covering more than one domain are classified following the main subject. We hope that researchers as well as practising engineers will find a lot of useful information in the book.

Asinamali : University Struggles in Post-Apartheid South Africa

Description

An edited collection of essays sponsored by the Committee for Academic Freedom in Africa. Asinamali marks CAFA's first enquiry into academic freedom in post-apartheid South Africa. Asinamali means 'we have no money' - a phrase that was often sung in the struggle against apartheid. A key demand of the fighters against apartheid was, in the famous words of the Freedom Charter adopted in 1955, 'that the doors of learning and culture shall be opened'. But in the 10 years since the end of apartheid the university system has become unequal and over-priveleged.

Hannah Robinson is just about to open the doors to her new shop Cupcakes on the Corner when out of the blue her boyfriend Patrick announces that he's leaving her for another woman. Faced with starting a business on her own, Hannah begins to wonder if her life-long dream has just turned into a nightmare. So her best friend Adam sets his birthday as a deadline - seven months to make her shop a success, or walk away from it all. And as Hannah immerses herself in her new business, she soon discovers that she's too busy to think about Patrick and his now pregnant girlfriend ...or to notice an increasingly regular customer who has recently developed a sweet tooth for all things cupcake. But while Hannah is slowly piecing her life back together, family friend Alice's is falling apart. Her husband Tom's drinking is getting out of control and things are about Asinamali : University Struggles in Post-Apartheid South Africa free pdf to get a whole lot worse. As the seven-month milestone approaches, Hannah must decide her future. And while she's figuring out what's really important, it becomes clear to everyone that happiness in life, and in love, is all in the making.

The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea

Description

The most comprehensive and authoritative reference book of its kind, The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea is a completely revised and updated edition of a classic volume that was first published in 1976 to huge acclaim, hailed as 'a beguiling book' (Daily Telegraph), 'marvellous' (The Times), and 'totally absorbing' (Financial Times). Among the many brand new entries to this edition are up-to-the-minute articles on underwater vehicles, tsunamis, warfare at sea, marine pollution, the Economic Exclustion Zone, and ship preservation. This Companion also includes authoritative and fascinating entries on maritime history: its naval battles, including Pearl Harbor and Trafalgar; its great ships, from Noah's Ark and the Bounty to the Titanic and the Mary Rose; and its most famous individuals, both real and fictional, including Christopher Columbus, Horatio Nelson, and Robinson Crusoe. Entries are fully cross-referenced, and the text is illustrated with over 260 detailed drawings, making it more accessible than ever before.

DuBois now provides 365 of the best readings and prayers he sent the president; in addition, each month DuBois offers a longer meditation on the spiritual lessons he learned by accompanying the president as he faced many historic moments and challenges--two elections, meeting Billy Graham, the Sandy Hook shootings, and more. By spending time each day with The President's Devotional, we are reminded what is most important in life, that we are not alone in our efforts, and what our true mission is in the world.

Fever Pitch

Description

In America, it is soccer. But in Great Britain, it is the real football. No pads, no prayers, no prisoners. And that's before the players even take the field.

Tyler has a football scholarship to Stanford, a hot girlfriend, and a reliable army of friends to party with. Then his mom kills herself. And Tyler lets it Fever Pitch pdf all go. Now he needs to dodge what his dad is offering (verbal tirades and abuse) and earn what his dad isn t (money): He needs a job. It s there that he reunites with Jordyn, his childhood best friend, and now the token goth girl at school. Jordyn brings Tyler an unexpected peace and, finally, love. But with his family in shambles, he can t risk bringing Jordyn too deeply into his life. So when violence rocks Tyler s world again, will it be Jordyn who shows him the way to a hopeful future? Or after everything, will Tyler have to find it in himself? This is a beautifully produced collection of stories written and illustrated by Radiohead's celebrated cover artist. Welcome to Stanley Donwood's fictional universe: a landscape of dark streets and high-rise concrete, creeping shadows and shifting perspectives; its citizens forever caught between boredom and paranoia, alive to the threat of menacing machines and Aliens from Outer Space. Here disappearances (people, things) are everyday. Relationships are unstable. Nature has turned unnatural. Unsettling dreams segue into waking nightmares. In Humor, Stanley Donwood reveals himself as a contemporary master of the micro-narrative, riffing on the four humors of the human body - sanguine, phlegm, choler and melancholy - to rummage beneath the veneer of sanity that passes for civilised society. Apocalyptic, funny and hallucinogenic in their intensity, these stories present a series of brief, haunting episodes in a world drained of meaning, sense and consequence.

Environment and Society: A Critical Introduction

[FREE] English Country House Eccentrics download pdf

David Long: English Country House Eccentrics

English Country House Eccentrics

Description

This is a lighthearted, witty but factual biographical account of the eccentric lifestyles of the builders and residents of one hundred of England's best-known country houses. Extraordinary buildings require extraordinary people, and over the centuries our historic houses have produced more than their fair share of oddballs. Insulated from the outside world by vast wealth, rolling acres and the social status that a title implies, aristocrats have always been able to amuse themselves - and now us - by pursuing idiosyncratic interests and manias to the point of eccentricity. The 12th Duke of Bedford, for example, preferred parrots to people - forcing his children to steal the birds' food to make up their meagre rations - while the 5th Duke of Portland paid his staff a bonus on the understanding they would never speak to him. The Hon. Henry Cavendish inherited GBP200 million at today's values, but never spent more than five shillings on dinner, while more recently the 2nd Lord Rothschild spent weeks training a team of zebra to pull his carriage up the Mall and into Buckingham Palace. Aimed squarely at the National Trust set, this lifts the lid on all that's bizarre, implausible, unthinkable and downright wacky about our glorious heritage homes and their unusual occupants.

Herve Tullet is one of the best-known and best-loved children's authors and illustrators working today. He has enchanted devotees of his unique style in previous, award-winning books, including "Night and Day", "The Five Senses" and "Imagine"."The Scribble Book" is an entirely new venture, one in which his young readers are invited to participate! Encouraged by Herve to pick up a crayon and scribble alongside him, they will lose all inhibitions and unlock their own creativity. They will feed scribbles to a hungry monster, scribble water to put out a fire, scribble flames coming out of a volcano, spaghetti for lunch and ski-tracks in the snow."The Scribble Book" does away with the English Country House Eccentrics download book traditional rules of the pre-school colouring book, encouraging children to cross boundaries and experiment for themselves. Gradually, as the book unfolds, the scribbles evolve into puzzles to be solved and finally into genuine drawings. Full of wit and humour, irreverent and enchanting, "The Scribble Book" is destined to become the latest success from the colourful mind of Herve Tullet.

A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice

Description

Malalai Joya was named one of "Time "magazine s 100 Most Influential People of 2010. An extraordinary young woman raised in the refugee camps of Iran and Pakistan, Joya became a teacher in secret girls schools, hiding her books under her burqa so the Taliban couldn t find them; she helped establish a free medical clinic and orphanage in her impoverished home province of Farah; and at a constitutional assembly in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2003, she stood up and denounced her country s powerful NATO-backed warlords. She was twenty-five years old. Two years later, she became the youngest person elected to Afghanistan s new Parliament. In 2007, she was suspended from Parliament for her persistent criticism of the warlords and drug barons and their cronies. She has survived four assassination attempts to date, is accompanied at all times by armed guards, and sleeps only in safe houses. Joya takes us inside this massively important and insufficiently understood country, shows us the desperate day-to-day situations its remarkable people face at every turn, and recounts some of the many acts of rebellion that are helping to change it. A controversial political figure in one of the most dangerous places on earth, Malalai Joya is a hero for our times."

THIS COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES AND VIGNETTES MARKED ERNEST HEMINGWAY'S AMERICAN DEBUT AND MADE HIM FAMOUS As Patten makes clear, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," far from being just an entertaining children's book, is more complex and deeply reflective of Dodgson's character than it may seem. By making an effort to understand its deeper layers, both children and A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice free epub adults may profit from this masterful tale by learning to think better and, along the way, having fun. 'Contains the most tense and serpentine interrogation scenes outside of John Le Carre' - Guardian This is the case she imagined. Precision-cut and savage, lithe and momentous. Antoinette Conway, the tough, abrasive detective from The Secret Place, is still on the Murder squad, but only just. She's partnered up with Stephen Moran now, and that's going well - but the rest of her working life isn't. Antoinette doesn't play well with others, and there's a vicious running campaign in the squad to get rid of her. She and Stephen pull a case that at first looks like a slam-dunk lovers' tiff. All she and her partner have to do is track down Lover Boy and bring him in. Then it'll be back to business as usual, watching from a distance as the real detectives go up against the psychopaths. Except when Antoinette takes a good look at the victim's face, she realises she's seen her somewhere before. And suddenly the conviction that there's a different answer takes her breath away.

Jason M Waltz,Steven Erikson: Writing Fantasy Heroes

Writing Fantasy Heroes

Description

Fantasy heroes endure. They are embedded in our cultural fabric, dwarfing other literary figures and the mere men and women of history. Achilles and Odysseus, Gilgamesh and Beowulf. King Arthur and Robin Hood, Macbeth and Sherlock Holmes, Conan and Luke Skywalker. They dominate our legends, and tower over popular culture. The stories we tell each other begin and end with fantasy heroes, and the 21st Century is as thoroughly captivated with them as ever. From Batman to Gandalf, Harry Potter to Tyrion Lannister, the heroes of fantasy speak to-and for-whole generations. But what makes a fantasy hero? How do the best writers create them, and bring them to life on the page? In WRITING FANTASY HEROES some of the most successful fantasy writers of our time-including Steven Erikson, Brandon Sanderson, Janet Morris, Cecelia Holland, Orson Scott Card, and Glen Cook-pull back the curtain to reveal the secrets of creating heroes that live and breathe, and steal readers' hearts. Whether you're an aspiring writer or simply a reader who loves great fantasy and strong characters, this book is for you.

Known to posterity as Scottorum Malleus - the Hammer of the Scots - Edward I was one of medieval England's most formidable rulers. In this meticulously researched new history, David Santiuste offers a fresh interpretation of Edward's military career, with a particular focus on his Scottish wars. This is in part a study of personality: Edward was a remarkable man. His struggles with tenacious opponents - including Robert the Bruce and William Wallace - have become the stuff of legend. There is a clear and perceptive account of important military events, notably the Battle of Falkirk, but the narrative also encompasses the wider impact of Edward's campaigns. Edward attempted to mobilize resources - including men, money and supplies - on an unprecedented scale. His wars affected people at all levels of society, throughout the British Isles. David Santiuste builds up a vivid and convincing description of Edward's campaigns in Scotland, Silly Sara: A Phonics Reader free epub whilst also exploring the political background. Edward emerges as a man of great conviction, who sought to bend Scotland to his will, yet also, on occasion, as a surprisingly beleaguered figure.Edward is presented here as the central character in a turbulent world, as commander and king.

Silly Sara: A Phonics Reader

Description

Silly Sara spills and slips and trips! Sara is sick of being silly, so she decides to become Super Sara in this beginning phonics reader that promotes word recognition through rhyme.

Wesley J. Chun: Core PYTHON Programming

Core PYTHON Programming

Description

Praise for Core Python Programming "The long-awaited second edition of Wesley Chun's Core Python Programming proves to be well worth the wait-its deep and broad coverage and useful exercises will help readers learn and practice good Python." -Alex Martelli, author of Python in a Nutshell and editor of Python Cookbook "There has been lot of good buzz around Wesley Chun's Core Python Programming. It turns out that all the buzz is well earned. I think this is the best book currently available for learning Python. I would recommend Chun's book over Learning Python (O'Reilly), Programming Python (O'Reilly), or The Quick Python Book (Manning)." -David Mertz, Ph.D., IBM DeveloperWorks(R) "I have been doing a lot of research [on] Python for the past year and have seen a number of positive reviews of your book. The sentiment expressed confirms the opinion that Core Python Programming is now considered the standard introductory text." -Richard Ozaki, Lockheed Martin "Finally, a book good enough to be both a textbook and a reference on the Python language now exists." -Michael Baxter, Linux Journal "Very well written. It is the clearest, friendliest book I have come across yet for explaining Python, and putting it in a wider context. It does not presume a large amount of other experience. It does go into some important Python topics carefully and in depth. Unlike too many beginner books, it never condescends or tortures the reader with childish hide-and-seek prose games. [It] sticks to gaining a solid grasp of Python syntax and structure." -http://python.org bookstore Web site "[If ] I could only own one Python book, it would be Core Python Programming by Wesley Chun. This book manages to cover more topics in more depth than Learning Python but includes it all in one book that also more than adequately covers the core language. [If] you are in the market for just one book about Python, I recommend this book. You will enjoy reading it, including its wry programmer's wit. More importantly, you will learn Python. Even more importantly, you will find it invaluable in helping you in your day-to-day Python programming life. Well done, Mr. Chun!" -Ron Stephens, Python Learning Foundation "I think the best language for beginners is Python, without a doubt. My favorite book is Core Python Programming." -s003apr, MP3Car.com Forums "Personally, I really like Python. It's simple to learn, completely intuitive, amazingly flexible, and pretty darned fast. Python has only just started to claim mindshare in the Windows world, but look for it to start gaining lots of support as people discover it. To learn Python, I'd start with Core Python Programming by Wesley Chun." -Bill Boswell, MCSE, Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine Online "If you learn well from books, I suggest Core Python Programming. It is by far the best I've found. I'm a Python newbie as well and in three months time I've been able to implement Python in projects at work (automating MSOffice, SQL DB stuff, etc.)." -ptonman, Dev Shed Forums "Python is simply a beautiful language. It's easy to learn, it's cross-platform, and it works. It has achieved many of the technical goals that Java strives for. A one-sentence description of Python would be: 'All other languages appear to have evolved over time--but Python was designed.' And it was designed well. Unfortunately, there aren't a large number of books for Python. The best one I've run across so far is Core Python Programming." -Chris Timmons, C. R. Timmons Consulting "If you like the Prentice Hall Core series, another good full-blown treatment to consider would be Core Python Programming. It addresses in elaborate concrete detail many practical topics that get little, if any, coverage in other books." -Mitchell L Model, MLM Consulting "Core Python Programming is an amazingly easy read! The liberal use of examples helps clarify some of the more subtle points of the language. And the comparisons to languages with which I'm already familiar (C/C++/Java) get you programming in record speed." -Michael Santos, Ph.D., Green Hills Software The Complete Developer's Guide to Python *New to Python? The definitive guide to Python development for experienced programmers *Covers core language features thoroughly, including those found in the latest Python releases-learn more than just the syntax! *Learn advanced topics such as regular expressions, networking, multithreading, GUI, Web/CGI, and Python extensions *Includes brand-new material on databases, Internet clients, Java/Jython, and Microsoft Office, plus Python 2.6 and 3 *Presents hundreds of code snippets, interactive examples, and practical exercises to strengthen your Python skills Python is an agile, robust, expressive, fully object-oriented, extensible, and scalable programming language. It combines the power of compiled languages with the simplicity and rapid development of scripting languages. Paula M. Block,Terry J. Erdmann: "Star Trek": The Original Series 365

Description

Star Trek 365 is the definitive, comprehensive and authorised guide to Star Trek: The Original Series, Gene Roddenberry's landmark, groundbreaking television programme that first aired from 1966-69 and went on to become an international phenomenon. A cornerstone of popular and sci-fi culture for more than four decades, the show first catapulted William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy to fame and has, through a long series of feature-film and television spinoffs, led to the creation of a uniquely rich and detailed fictional universe. A visual celebration of the original voyages of the starship Enterprise, Star Trek 365 covers each episode and season in unprecedented detail, combining in-depth synopses, behind-the-scenes histories, and interviews with writers, cast, crew and fans with critical commentary on how the show's themes resonated when they first aired and how they continue to be relevant today. The book also looks at the original days of Star Trek fandom and the show's enduring cultural legacy, from the launching of NASA's Space Shuttle Enterprise in 1978 to the Smithsonian's exhibition of rare Star Trek material in 1992 to the present day. In addition to its wealth of never-before-seen images and newly commissioned photography of models, props, costumes, collectibles and ephemera, Star Trek 365 uses unprecedented access to the CBS archives to reproduce a treasure trove of still images - newly retouched and remastered - taken directly from the series' original 16mm film slides. Written by longtime CBS insider Paula M. Block, Star Trek 365 boldly goes where no other Star Trek book has gone before, combining rare and iconic imagery with a complete reference guide to the original show's seventy-nine episodes - a perfect gift for Star Trek fans of all ages.
